Trend hook: Stop Treating CSS Container Queries Like Traditional Media Queries

Web design lesson from this week's internet

Every Monday I pick something the internet is buzzing about and ask a simple question: what would this mean if you were redesigning a small-business website in Greater Manchester this week?

This week the hook is Stop Treating CSS Container Queries Like Traditional Media Queries. You do not need to chase the meme. You do need the same job that trend is doing: grab attention fast, make the point obvious, and tell people what to do next.

People decide in a couple of seconds

Most visitors land on a phone, half-distracted. If the first screen does not say who you help, where you work and how to contact you, they bounce. High contrast, a plain-English headline and a thumb-friendly button beat a clever animation.

Design the next tap, not the decoration

  • One primary call to action above the fold (Call, WhatsApp or Get a quote).
  • Real photos of the work or the people — not generic stock handshakes.
  • Proof nearby: reviews, a local area, or a before-and-after.

Speed is part of the brand

If the page crawls, the design does not matter. Compress images, keep the layout simple, and make sure the site is actually usable on a 4G commute. That is the unglamorous half of "websites that actually work".
